A LETTER FROM ELSIE L . JAMES OF MEDICAL MERCY CANADA
In Dhading District, Nepal (one of four districts most devastated by the Apr 25, 2015 earthquake), there is a small school, the Swabalambi Primary School for Deaf Children, that is opening an exciting world of knowledge to the 52 students presently attending.
Construction of the school began in 2013 on land donated by a local farmer. With the help of Medical Mercy Canada, the dream of a small group of Nepali teachers, most of them also profoundly deaf, is coming to fruition.
Thankfully, the unfinished school building survived the earthquake, and we hope construction will be completed in 2016, with enough classroom and hostel space for 100 students.
Students currently range in age from 6 to 16, in grades KG to Grade 5. Because these children were unable to be taught in a regular classroom, none had been able to attend school before Swabalambi School was established. A survey conducted in this rural area indicates there are more than 400 hearing-impaired children and adults living there.
Being taught Nepali sign language is now opening wide the door to literacy and learning. For some, the additional gift of a hearing aid will expand their opportunities far beyond their expectations. It will take them from a world of silence into one of sound. Thank you for helping their dreams come true.
ELSIE L. JAMES, DIRECTOR AND NEPAL PROJECT MANAGER, MEDICAL MERCY CANADA
